The Amazon Spheres: Conservatories Entering the Workplace

In the heart of downtown Seattle, surrounded by conventional steel and concrete towers, sit three magnificent conservatory domes crafted from glass and intricate steel framework. Known as The Amazon Spheres, this architectural centerpiece is far more than an eye-catching urban landmark—it stands as a breathtaking synthesis of organic nature, bespoke structural design, and human innovation.

Today, conservatories are defining a new era of wellness centric workplaces. By bringing vibrant plant life and abundant daylight indoors, these biophilic spaces offer a restorative environment where employees can reconnect with nature, reduce stress, and refresh their mental focus throughout the workday.

History and Architectural Vision

Unveiled in January 2018 after years of meticulous design and craftsmanship, The Spheres were developed as part of Amazon’s urban campus expansion in Seattle’s Denny Triangle neighborhood. Designed by the architectural firm NBBJ, the project sought to address a defining challenge of modern design: how to seamlessly integrate the tranquility and vital energy of natural environments into the built world.

The core philosophy driving the project was biophilia—the intrinsic human need to connect with nature and natural light. Rather than confining employees to standard office floors, the designers envisioned a soaring conservatory space where individuals could collaborate, find quiet inspiration, and recharge beneath custom glass spans. Grounded in research showing that organic elements and abundant daylight enhance creative thinking, focus, and overall well-being, The Spheres represent a grand celebration of light, space, and architectural harmony.

What The Spheres Represent

Beyond their striking geometric form, The Spheres stand as a testament to sustainable architectural artistry and modern conservatory construction. They demonstrate that dense urban centers can house thriving, living spaces without sacrificing elegance or ecological richness.

The three intersecting domes function as a living sanctuary, housing over 40,000 plants representing more than 50 countries and recreating high-altitude cloud forest ecosystems from across the globe. Constructed using 620 tons of structural steel and over 2,600 custom-engineered glass panels, the building embodies how advanced structural engineering and botanical beauty can coalesce into a timeless masterpiece.
